Today, it is a key economic agglomeration, but also a crossroad of transport routes. Its importance is also supported by a railway junction and an international airport.
Already the fourth opened Aupark in Slovakia came to Košice with an investment of almost 100 million Euros and the region received nearly 800 job opportunities. It also brought 140 premises on the area of 34,000 square meters into the metropolis of East Slovakia, as well as 1100 parking lots with the most modern parking system in the city centre. Three floors of Aupark Košice offer to its visitors new shopping opportunities, services and relaxation in the city. Shopping and entertainment centre Aupark Košice is situated directly in the historical downtown of Košice on Námestie Osloboditeľov Square, it offers to its visitors as well as to city residents an excellent access as it is in the vicinity of pedestrian zone and also perfect transport connections.
Today‘s Námestie Osloboditeľov Square served as a marketplace which created the atmosphere of Košice. It was a synonym of the variety of offer and a pleasant shopping in the 19th century. Besides its economic dimension this place had also its communication dimension. It was a place where people met and got to know each other. The shopping – entertainment centre Aupark, which becomes a cultural and social point and a new city boulevard of today naturally follows up to the history of this place -the times when it served as a meeting point of our ancestors.
The history of a special place in Aupark is also reminded by a historical monument – the citadel. According to the conservationists’ request it is open for public on several places. On the square in front of Aupark as well as in its underground parking, “in situ” meaning in exact depth and in position as it was discovered during the excavating. The permanent exhibition of historical findings as cannon balls or ceramics is placed at the information desk in Aupark together with video presentation about the citadel. At the occasion of its opening, Aupark Košice issued also a unique book named The Citadel of Košice, which deals with its history.
